Local Knowledge: Gordon's Pipes and Problems
Plenty of the streets here still carry wide-verandah Federation homes built in the run-up to the First World War, on generous blocks that have barely been carved up since. A run of mid-century houses and newer apartment stock fills out the rest, mostly closer to the shops and the station.
Homes from that first building wave went in on earthenware clay drainage, and a hundred years in the ground has left plenty of it cracked or sitting off its original fall. On blocks near the bushland edge, roots go looking for exactly those weak points, working into ageing joints wherever they've shifted.
That bushland edge is part of the character of the place. The grey-headed flying-foxes that camp at the Ku-ring-gai Flying-fox Reserve each summer are proof of how much bushland presses right up against the built-up streets, and a thirsty root system chases the same moisture a hairline crack leaks out.
Older Federation homes near Ravenswood School for Girls and the private hospital on the highway sit on some of the largest, leafiest blocks in the area. The bigger the garden, the more established the root system working against the pipe underneath it.
The heritage-listed Eryldene house and garden is a good example of just how mature that planting gets on a block that's never been subdivided.
We clear the immediate blockage, then put a camera down the line so you can see exactly what's happening before anything gets dug up. From there it's either a targeted blocked drain repair or a full CCTV drain inspection if you'd rather know the whole picture first.

What Sits Underground on an Older Block
A pre-war home almost always means a shallower, narrower original pipe run than anything built since. Nothing was designed with a dishwasher, a second bathroom or an irrigation system in mind.
Decades of small additions tend to stack extra load onto a line that was already close to its limit.
Mid-century houses further from the shops usually sit on the same clay drainage, just laid a couple of decades later. It's the newer apartment stock near the station where PVC pipe starts to show up.
That's one reason a two-storey block from the 2000s rarely calls us out for the same fault as a Federation home three streets over. Either way, we camera the line, quote it, then get on with the fix.

Our Blocked Drain Services in Gordon
Whatever the job, the same approach applies to every property we visit: inspect, quote, then fix.
Blocked drain repair. Targeted fixes for cracked or offset clay pipe, without unnecessary digging.
CCTV drain inspection. Footage of the pipe first, so the quote matches the actual fault.
Blocked sewer. Root-cleared and jetted, with a lasting fix available where the pipe warrants it.
Drain cleaning. A run-through with the jetter on a routine basis, clearing grease, roots and everyday build-up before it can choke the line completely.

The Blockages Gordon Homes Report Most
Roots are the most common cause we see on these older, tree-lined streets, working into clay joints that have already started to move. Close behind is straightforward pipe age: earthenware laid before the war was never built to outlast a century, and it shows.
Steeper blocks add a third pattern. Where the land falls away toward the creek lines threading through the suburb, yard drains can overwhelm quickly in a heavy downpour, particularly on runs that were undersized to begin with.
Around the local public school and the older streets near St John's Anglican Church, we also see plenty of narrow, original pipe runs that were fine for a single-family home but struggle once a bathroom or laundry has been added over the decades.

Right Now Problems, Same-Day Answers
Slow drainage is an early warning here, not a one-off, and pipes this old rarely need much of a push to seize up completely. Watch for any of the following.
- Water backing up out of a floor drain or shower recess
- The toilet refusing to clear, or refilling by itself after a flush
- Gurgling from other fixtures when you run a tap or flush
- A bad smell from an outdoor drain or gully trap
- Slow drainage across more than one fixture at once
Every autumn the heavy canopy across this pocket comes down fast, and it doesn't take much wind to choke a grate or gully trap within a day or two.
Get on top of any of these quickly. A small backup left alone tends to turn into water inside the house, not less of a problem.
Ring (02) 9023 2087, describe what's happening, and we'll go from there.

Why Gordon Locals Choose a Team from Next Door
Killara is our home turf, and this is a suburb we're in constantly, not somewhere we schedule in once in a blue moon. That familiarity means less time working out what's under an older block and more time actually fixing it.
Ku-ring-gai Council covers this whole pocket, and being close by means we can usually get a plumber out quickly rather than booking someone in for later in the week.
A lot of these homes have had one owner for a long time, which often means nobody has looked under the house since it was built. When a bathroom or laundry finally gets renovated, that's usually the point an old repair or an undersized pipe run gets found, not before.
Two things back every job regardless of how close we are. Work that's covered for life with no expiry date, and one fixed price agreed before anything starts.

Our Process, Kept Simple
- Ring through and outline the fault. Naming the fixture and what it's doing means we send someone already briefed on the job, not guessing on arrival.
- On-site assessment. We inspect the blockage and, where it helps, run the camera through the line.
- One fixed price for the whole job. Nothing changes once we've shaken on it, no surprises later.
- Sorted, and backed for life. Whether that means clearing the line or repairing the pipe, the same lifetime cover applies either way.
